British Celanese Hockey Club began as a Men's Works Team in 1925.  A Ladies section was not started until after the war, (approx) in 1945.

In 1981, British Celanese sold their name to America Celanese so the firms name had to change becoming Courtaulds Acetate and the teams followed suit...(a nightmare for Umpires and players alike).

In 1985/6 the Club renamed once again to Spondon Hockey Club, easier on the tongue, a good name for the club and for any oppositions not sure of where we played, a clue to our geographical position.  By now we had two men's teams and started a second Ladies side.

Derby Asterdale Hockey Club

The club as we know it now was formed in the Summer of 1999 by the merging of Derby Hockey Club and Spondon Hockey Club (previously British Celanese HC and Courtaulds HC, for those with long memories). The name is taken from the Asterdale Sports and Social Club which was until 2007 the home of the club.

Derby Asterdale Hockey Club is one of the largest clubs in Derbyshire, with 7 senior league teams (3 Ladies, 4 Mens, & 1 Mixed), along with a junior boys & girls training programme available on Sunday mornings.

The Mens section play within the Midlands leagues (MRHA) at varying levels. Our Ladies 1st XI play in the Midlands Feeder League (MRHAWL) and our 2nd XI and 3rd XI in the more local Derbyshire League.

We train throughout the season at our home ground in Long Eaton and have the services of some highly skilled coaches to call upon.

We welcome players of all ages and abilities and are confident we can provide a safe and fun atmosphere to play and develop your individual Hockey skills and aspirations.

We aren't just about the Hockey though, we have a thriving social side to the club with regular events for everyone to get involved in. Our Quiz nights, Karaokes, Barn Dances or our end of season Presentation Nights all add to the value of our great club atmosphere.
